Joe Biden speech on Trump, Jan. 6 insurrection: ‘We nearly lost America’

From Time Magazine:

President Joe Biden warned that Donald Trump’s effort to retake the White House in 2024 poses a grave threat to the country, as the third anniversary of the violent Capitol riot approaches.

Biden, speaking near Valley Forge, emphasized the importance of defending democracy by rejecting Trump, the likely GOP frontrunner for the next election.

The President drew attention to Trump’s role in the Capitol attack by a mob of his supporters, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries of police.

Trump, who faces 91 criminal charges, argues that Biden and other Democrats are undermining democracy with their legal actions against him.

Biden participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at Valley Forge National Arch and invoked George Washington’s legacy to criticize Trump’s motives and campaign.

The Jan. 6 attack is remembered in a largely polarized fashion now, with Republican attitudes toward the attack largely being split from the Democrats and Independents.

Biden has criticized political leaders who have abandoned the truth and democracy in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack.

The President continues to invoke the dangers of Jan. 6, as seen in his remarks and actions commemorating the event over the past few years, just two weeks after the 2021 inauguration on the same Capitol steps where police struggled to control Capitol rioters.

Biden’s recent appearance included supporters and young people motivated to get involved in politics as a result of the attack.
