Buy Cell Phone Service From Elon Musk? Starlink’s New Tech May Soon Allow Connectivity ‘Anywhere On Earth’

From Nasdaq:

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has launched its first set of direct-to-cell Starlink satellites, potentially disrupting the mobile phone industry by providing cell phone connectivity anywhere on Earth. With plans for text messaging this year and voice and data capabilities coming in 2025, Musk is confident in Starlink’s capabilities. The new technology may soon provide competition to existing terrestrial cellular networks.

In partnership with T-Mobile US, SpaceX has received approval from the Federal Communications Commission to test direct-to-cell capabilities. SpaceX also has partnerships with other telecom companies in other countries. Starlink currently offers internet service across 70 countries, and the new direct-to-cell feature could expand the company’s customer base. The technology works with existing cell phones to increase connectivity, appealing particularly to consumers in rural areas or those experiencing dead zones with their current cell phone plans.

Other companies, including Amazon’s Project Kuiper, AST SpaceMobile, and even Elon Musk’s Tesla, are also exploring satellite-based cell phone service. These developments highlight the growing relevance of satellite connectivity for smartphones, with potential competition arising among companies trying to use satellites to improve cell phone coverage. With various companies working on satellite-based cell phone capabilities, it’s clear that the landscape for mobile phone service is poised to evolve.
