Richard Smith, son of FedEx’s founder Fred Smith, has been nominated for the company’s board of directors, paving the way for him to potentially become CEO. The nomination was announced by NYSE: FDX Chairman Brad Martin in preparation for the annual shareholder meeting on Sept. 29.
Richard Smith, 47, currently serves as the COO for FedEx Express International and airline operations. With 20 years of experience at FedEx, he has held various high-level executive positions, including president and CEO of Federal Express and head of FedEx Logistics.
Industry veteran Satish Jindel sees Richard Smith’s nomination as the first step in a succession plan to eventually become CEO. Jindel predicts that current CEO Raj Subramaniam will become chairman when Martin leaves in 2026, with Richard Smith likely taking over as president and COO of FedEx Express.
Jindel’s prediction aligns with FedEx’s plan to groom Richard Smith for leadership, following in the footsteps of his late father. With Subramaniam currently serving as CEO, there is ample time for Richard Smith to gain experience and transition into a leadership role within the company.
The succession plan aims to carry on Fred Smith’s legacy, as highlighted during a ceremony celebrating his life. Jindel emphasizes the importance of continuity and the strategic development of leadership within FedEx to ensure the company’s continued success.
