The major U.S. averages saw considerable volatility on Friday before ending with slight gains, leading to down averages for the first time in 10 weeks. The Labor Department’s report showed stronger than expected job growth in December, causing concerns about the outlook for interest rates. The surge in crude oil prices on Friday reflected fears of an escalation in the Israel-Hamas war.
