Eisai and Biogen have launched the anti-amyloid beta monoclonal antibody LEQEMBI in Austria and will launch in Germany to treat early Alzheimer’s disease. The medication targets an underlying cause of AD and is for adult patients with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia due to AD. In clinical trials, LEQEMBI reduced clinical decline by 31% compared to placebo at 18 months. The most common adverse reactions were infusion-related reactions, ARIA-H, headache, and ARIA-E. Eisai and Biogen will co-promote LEQEMBI in the EU, with Eisai as the Marketing Authorization Holder. Additional monitoring is required for the medicine.
The approval of LEQEMBI was based on Phase 3 data from the Clarity AD clinical trial, which showed significant results in meeting primary and key secondary endpoints. The medication is a humanized monoclonal antibody that targets amyloid-beta in its soluble and insoluble forms. The controlled access program is in place to ensure appropriate use of LEQEMBI. The reduction of protofibrils is believed to prevent cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease by reducing brain cell damage. The European Commission approved the medication in April 2025, making it the first treatment to target the underlying cause of AD. In the Clarity AD clinical trial, lecanemab showed a 31% reduction in clinical decline on the CDR-SB scale compared to placebo in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The treatment also led to a 33% less decline on the ADCS MCI-ADL scale. Adverse reactions included infusion-related reactions, ARIA-H, headache, and ARIA-E. Lecanemab is under regulatory review in multiple countries and has been approved in 48 countries. A Phase 3 clinical study for preclinical AD and a study for Dominantly Inherited AD are ongoing. Physicians and patients must enroll in a controlled access program before starting treatment with lecanemab.
Eisai and Biogen have been collaborating on developing AD treatments since 2014. Lecanemab, which has been approved in multiple countries, is a product of this collaboration. Eisai has a long-term partnership with BioArctic regarding AD treatments. Their collaboration has led to the development and commercialization of lecanemab. Eisai’s Corporate Concept focuses on providing benefits to patients and reducing health disparities. They aim to create innovative products in areas of high medical need, particularly in Neurology and Oncology. Biogen, founded in 1978, is a biotechnology company that focuses on delivering new medicines to transform patients’ lives. They take bold risks to deliver long-term growth and value for shareholders and communities. Biogen urges followers to connect on social media platforms. The company’s latest news release highlights forward-looking statements about the potential clinical effects of lecanemab in treating Alzheimer’s disease. Biogen emphasizes the risks and uncertainties associated with drug development and commercialization. The company’s collaboration with Eisai is also mentioned, along with the importance of cautious reliance on forward-looking statements.
