Here’s how to turn unused gift cards into cash

From CNBC:

Attention holiday shoppers – don’t let those unused gift cards go to waste. According to a 2023 Bankrate survey, 47% of U.S. adults have at least one unused card, with a nationwide value of $23 billion. While the average value is $187 per person, there are now websites that allow users to sell their gift cards for cash.

But be careful when selling or buying gift cards online. John Breyault, of the National Consumers League, warns against using Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist due to reports of fraud. Some due diligence is advised before transacting, such as checking with the Better Business Bureau and doing a simple Google search for potential scams.

In addition to selling or exchanging, consumers can also donate unused cards to charity or regift them. Bear in mind that about a dozen states require retailers to pay cash back for partially used gift cards, with most states requiring this for card balances of about $5 or less. California is the most generous state, requiring this for cards of $9.99 or less. Be sure to research the regulations in your state.
