OpenAI responds to New York Times lawsuit, saying the newspaper isn’t telling the whole story about its data use. The suit claims OpenAI and Microsoft relied on copyrighted Times articles to train their features.

OpenAI admits “rare bug” caused chatbot to reproduce Times articles almost verbatim. The AI tech uses large language models to analyze text from news articles and uses that to generate new text when prompted.

There’s a common practice of using online data for AI technology, but artists are calling foul. OpenAI says it is making progress fixing the issue. The newspaper declined to comment.
