Valterra Platinum plans to start trial mining at an underground pit in its Mogalakwena mine, the world’s largest open-pit platinum group metals (PGM) mine, by late 2026. The Sandsloot pit will be developed due to higher ore grades, a move prompted by declining grades that increase costs and risks.
Mogalakwena is crucial for Valterra, contributing nearly half of the company’s PGM output. A feasibility study for the underground project began in July, with an investment decision expected in the first half of 2027. Executives aim to boost demand in existing markets and create new demand segments.
Anglo American recently completed a demerger of 51% of its interest in Valterra Platinum, retaining a 19.9% stake. The company plans to responsibly manage its remaining stake to achieve a full separation over time. The underground mine at Mogalakwena is expected to increase concentrate production by 10-50%.
