A health savings account (HSA) and a high-yield savings account (HYSA) serve different purposes. HSAs offer tax advantages, long-term growth potential, and no balance limits. In contrast, HYSAs provide higher interest rates but no tax benefits. HSAs are ideal for healthcare savings and supplementing retirement funds, while HYSAs are good for short- to medium-term savings goals.

HSAs require a high-deductible health plan (HDHP) for eligibility. In 2026, Bronze and Catastrophic Marketplace plans, as well as direct primary care (DPC) users, will qualify. On the other hand, HYSAs function like regular savings accounts but offer higher interest rates. Both accounts can be used for medical expenses, but only HSAs provide tax advantages.

HSAs benefit individuals with higher tax rates the most, offering significant tax breaks and long-term savings potential. On the other hand, HYSAs are suitable for short- to medium-term financial goals, offering penalty-free access to funds and competitive interest rates. Whether saving for emergencies, a down payment, or medical expenses, HYSAs provide flexibility and accessibility.
