The Dow Jones Industrial Average has seen significant changes in the past five years. Meta Platforms and Netflix must split their stocks to be considered for inclusion. Alphabet and Broadcom have the best chances of being added to the index. The Dow includes 30 U.S. companies from various sectors and remains a widely followed stock market index.

The Dow’s composition has shifted to reflect the U.S. economy, with financials and technology dominating. Over the past five years, six components have changed, including Salesforce and Nvidia. The current tech-focused Dow includes four of the “Ten Titans” growth stocks, making up 38% of the S&P 500’s value.

The Dow is price-weighted, with a median stock price around $227. Nvidia, Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple are included without dominating the index due to stock splits. Alphabet, Broadcom, Tesla, and Oracle have reasonable stock prices, while Meta Platforms and Netflix would need significant splits to be considered.

Potential Dow changes include Alphabet replacing Verizon, Meta Platforms replacing Honeywell, and Netflix replacing Walt Disney. Broadcom could replace Cisco Systems, and Oracle could replace International Business Machines. Tesla might replace Nike, bringing more representation to the communication services sector.

Alphabet is a strong candidate for Dow inclusion due to its tech and media exposure. Verizon, the lowest weighted Dow component, could be replaced. Honeywell’s upcoming split makes it a potential deletion candidate. Netflix’s leadership in streaming may warrant inclusion, possibly replacing Disney.

Broadcom could replace Cisco Systems in the Dow, offering diverse tech exposure and a strong dividend track record. Oracle could replace IBM, both adapting to AI trends. Tesla might replace Nike, bringing automaker representation and consumer discretionary exposure to the index.

Speculation about the Dow’s future composition reflects market trends and the need for growth stock representation. Adding more of the Ten Titans to the index could improve performance. Investors should consider the potential changes when choosing stocks for their portfolios.
