Orlen has signed a contract with Equinor to procure over six million tonnes of crude oil from the Johan Sverdrup field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, fulfilling 15% of Orlen Group’s annual oil consumption starting in September. This move aligns with Orlen’s goal of enhancing energy security in Poland and the region. Orlen has phased out Russian oil from its refineries and diversified its sources to include the Middle East, North Sea, Africa, and the Americas. Equinor’s Irene Rummelhoff expressed satisfaction in expanding the energy partnership with Orlen, emphasizing their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy security. Orlen processed 9.8mt of crude oil in the first half of 2025, a 5% increase from the previous year, demonstrating their efforts to strengthen energy security in the region. The CEO, Ireneusz Fąfara, highlighted the elimination of Russian crude from their refineries and the significance of the long-term contract with Equinor for high-quality, low-emission crude from the Johan Sverdrup field. The field accounts for one-third of Norway’s total oil production and emphasizes stable production and energy security through alternative supply sources.
