The Walt Disney Company will pay $10 million to settle FTC allegations of unlawful collection of children’s personal data on YouTube. Disney allowed data to be collected from kids who viewed child-directed videos without parental consent. The company violated children’s online privacy rules by not labeling certain videos as made for kids.

After a previous settlement with the FTC, YouTube began requiring content creators to label videos as “made for kids” or “not made for kids” to prevent data collection and targeted ads. Comments are disabled on “made for kids” videos. The proposed settlement with Disney includes a $10 million civil penalty and compliance with data protection rules.

Disney stated that the settlement does not involve their own digital platforms, but rather the distribution of content on YouTube. They emphasized their commitment to children’s privacy laws and ensuring the safety of kids and families. The company will implement a program to review YouTube videos to determine if they should be labeled as “made for kids.”
