IRS Announces 2024 Tax Season Start Date, Filing Deadline
From Time:
Tax season is approaching, with the IRS accepting and processing 2023 tax returns starting January 29. The agency anticipates over 128 million returns by the April 15 deadline, promising customer service improvements and expanded in-person services. Taxpayers can also file returns for free directly with the IRS in some states.
Taxpayers are advised to have all the necessary forms before filing, including W-2 or 1099-NEC. Many tax prep services have already rolled out their software, but the IRS won’t begin processing returns until Jan. 29. Those who file early should ensure they have all their paperwork by the end of January.
The IRS Free File program income limit for 2024 is up to $79,000, an increase from $73,000 for 2022. Eligible taxpayers will be able to file for free through the IRS Direct File pilot, which will undergo final testing and become widely available in mid-March to eligible taxpayers in 13 participating states.
The tax filing deadline for most taxpayers is Monday, April 15, 2024. If you live in Maine or Massachusetts, the deadline is April 17 due to holidays. Form 4868 can be submitted for an extension, pushing the deadline to Oct. 15, but it doesn’t extend the time to pay any taxes owed.
The IRS typically issues tax refunds within 21 days, but it could take longer for more complicated returns or paper filings. Refunds for returns claiming certain credits won’t be issued before mid-February. Electronic filing with direct deposit is the fastest method, and the Where’s My Refund? tool can be used to check the status of a refund.
