Grandparents and even great-grandparents are projected to live longer by the end of the century. But don’t expect them to help with childcare

1. An international team of researchers predicts that shrinking family sizes worldwide by nearly 40% due to lower fertility will impact caregiving for the elderly. While families are expected to grow vertically, grandparents and great-grandparents may be too old and frail to help with caregiving.

2. Amid increased life expectancy globally, life expectancy in the U.S. has fallen for a second consecutive year, reaching 76.1 years in 2021. The gap in life expectancy between men and women widened to nearly six years due to COVID mortality, deaths from despair, and firearm violence. The U.S. ranks near the bottom in life expectancy globally.
