Bank manager fired for using N word awarded up to $637,000 in damages

From Fortune:

A bank manager, Carl Borg-Neal, who was sacked by Lloyds in 2021 after using the N-word in an anti-racism seminar, has been awarded £500,000 ($637,000) in damages. The ruling judges that Borg-Neal acted without malice and due to his dyslexia. Lloyds accepted that Borg-Neal acted without malice and apologized immediately after saying the word.

A tribunal ruled that Lloyds ‘went too far’ in firing Borg-Neal and recommended a warning and more training instead. Damages for past and future loss of earnings, injury to feelings, personal injury, and interest fees amount to $637,000. Lloyds accepted the ruling after initially challenging it and plans to award the damages to Borg-Neal.

Middle-aged white men are ‘bottom of everything’ Borg-Neal claims he would have accepted a pay cut or a demotion, rather than being dismissed. The tribunal agreed that Borg-Neal was dismissed unfairly and faced disability discrimination, but dismissed his claim of racial discrimination. Borg-Neal doesn’t believe his race was behind the dismissal.

Natwest Bank was also subject to a similar controversy, after closing a bank account belonging to Nigel Farage, an ally of Donald Trump. initially told his account was closed due to low balance, it was later revealed it was due to his views not aligning with the bank.
