Albania appoints AI-powered virtual assistant, Diella, as one of the world’s first AI politicians to combat corruption in government procurement. Diella has issued over 36,600 digital documents and provided nearly 1,000 services through the e-Albania platform. Prime Minister Edi Rama hopes to keep Albania “100% free of corruption” with Diella’s help.
AI bots are increasingly taking on government roles worldwide, with Ukraine unveiling “Victoria Shi,” an AI-generated spokesperson for foreign affairs last May. Albania has focused more on AI than crypto, despite enacting comprehensive crypto legislation in 2020. The Bank of Albania continues to warn against trading crypto, slowing its adoption.
Albania has long battled corruption, with officials accused of benefiting from contracts. Mayor Erion Veliaj, former President Illir Meta, and ex-minister Lefter Koka faced corruption charges. Despite setbacks, PM Edi Rama aims for Albania to join the EU by 2030, overcoming obstacles that have hindered its membership since 2014.
