Scrap is crucial for decarbonisation efforts, with companies investing €700 million to boost recycling capacity. Non-EU countries restrict scrap exports, but the steel sector faces immediate concerns over new import regulations.
Despite calls for export restrictions, Europe’s scrap sellers resist. Industry group EuRIC attributes scrap exports to low domestic demand and inadequate processing capacity. Recycling aluminium saves 95% energy compared to mining bauxite. The Commission will assess the need for action by the end of Q3.
