Chilean government partners with Google to launch Asia-Pacific fiber optic link

Chile partners with Google to construct the Humboldt Cable Project, connecting Chile and Australia with a 144 terabyte capacity undersea fiber-optic cable of 14,800 kilometers. This aims to boost Chile’s digital activity. China and the U.S. have been competing for influence in Latin America, impacting undersea fiber-optic cable projects.
U.S. President Biden, aiming to counter China’s growing influence in the region, pledged to strengthen economic ties with Latin America. Meanwhile, a Reuters investigation found that undersea fiber-optic cable projects to Asia, including Google-backed ones, were originally intended for China but were redirected due to U.S. diplomatic pressure and security concerns about data interception.
China President Xi Jingping has been striving to strengthen ties with Chile, to assert the country’s influence in the region. This comes as the U.S. and China have been vying for economic and political influence, particularly in technology and infrastructure projects like undersea fiber-optic cables.
