Netflix removes Indian film with meat-eating scene after Hindu backlash

From Nasdaq:

Netflix has removed an Indian language film after backlash for depicting Hindu priest’s daughter eating meat. The movie, titled “Annapoorani – The Goddess of Food”, was pulled from the platform after protests from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad at Netflix’s Mumbai office.

The movie sparked outrage for showing the daughter of a Hindu priest eating meat in a high-stakes cooking contest. The move was seen as offensive to Hindus, prompting a complaint to Mumbai’s police and an apology from Amazon for similar actions in its series “Tandav”.

Netflix and other streaming platforms have faced backlash from hardline religious groups in India, which is expected to grow into a $7 billion market for the sector by 2027.
