Hunter Biden pleads not guilty to federal charges on dodging $1.4m in taxes after his earlier plea deal imploded

From Fortune:

Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to federal tax charges. After a plea deal was collapsed, Biden could face a federal trial in 2024. Prosecutors accuse Biden of skipping out on paying $1.4 million and using the money for drug-fueled lifestyle. He also faces gun charges for lying on a gun purchase form in 2018.

The judge has set a trial date of June 20 for Hunter Biden. Biden has also been charged with lying on a 2018 federal form to purchase a gun, and with possessing the gun illegally. This comes as part of a federal investigation into his tax and business dealings which had been expected to close with a plea deal.

Hunter Biden’s proposed plea deal fell through. This marks a political and legal drama as the 2024 election draws closer. Both Biden and Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner, are facing federal indictments. Biden’s attorney suggested that there was Congressional interference in the deal and accused the special counsel of bowing to Republican pressure.

Hunter Biden’s attorney claims there was no need for additional hearings on the failed plea deal. The prosecutor says high-profile people face prosecutions often. Biden faces separate attempts by congressional Republicans to link his business to his father. There has been no evidence that Joe Biden, in his current or previous role, has committed crimes.

First lady Jill Biden calls the GOP’s treatment of her son “cruel”, and says that it has taken its toll on her grandchildren. If convicted, Hunter Biden can get a 17-year sentence. Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special counsel to handle the matter, as there was a conflict perceived in the Justice Department.
