American Express has introduced blockchain-based travel stamps for customers, stored as ERC-721 NFTs on Ethereum. The stamps can be personalized with trip highlights and can’t be transferred. Data from BaseScan shows the smart contract was created 25 days ago. This move aligns with a trend of using public blockchains for secure data storage.
The NFT travel stamps cater to the demand for digital keepsakes, as 73% of respondents in an Amex survey want more ways to commemorate past trips digitally. Another 56% miss receiving passport stamps when traveling. Customers can share stamps on social media or save them to a camera roll, with automatic addition of trips booked through Amex up to two years ago.
The integration of crypto into the travel industry is gaining traction, with Travala allowing crypto payments for 2.2 million hotels on Trivago. Crypto users typically spend more on hotel stays and stay longer, catering to their flexible work lifestyles. 14% of crypto transactions were spent on travel and hospitality in 2024, with more airlines accepting crypto for bookings.
