Frontier Airlines CEO Barry Biffle responded to United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby’s claim that the discount airline model is dead by saying they have an oversupply issue in the U.S. Frontier boasts lower unit costs and caters to customers looking for cheap flights while splurging on other travel expenses. Both Frontier and United are adding flights on major Spirit Airlines routes to attract customers. Ultra-low-cost airlines are struggling due to increased costs post-pandemic, oversupply of domestic flights, and competition from larger airlines offering basic economy tickets and global networks. Kirby believes customers care about value and don’t get it from ultra-low-cost carriers. Budget airlines are now offering more upscale options and bundles to remain competitive. Frontier reported a net loss in the second quarter but anticipates unit revenue growth in the third quarter and profitability in 2026.
