Spirit Airlines is set to furlough around 1,800 flight attendants, representing a third of its cabin crew members, in a bid to reduce costs amidst its second bankruptcy in less than a year. CEO Dave Davis warned of job cuts and fleet reduction to stabilize the business. 800 flight attendants on voluntary leaves have helped avoid involuntary furloughs. The airline plans to offer voluntary furloughs for cabin crew members, with the final number affected yet to be determined. Flight attendants can apply for voluntary leaves of absence for six or 12 months while retaining medical benefits. The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA is working to help affected members secure interviews with other airlines. Spirit has also furloughed hundreds of pilots and aims to cut $100 million in costs from aviators. Management is negotiating with the Air Line Pilots Association to reach an agreement by Oct. 1, but the bankruptcy process could lead to relief outside the labor contract.
