OpenAI seeks to ally election meddling fears in blog post

From Nasdaq:

OpenAI addresses concerns about its technology meddling with elections as more than a third of the world goes to the polls. The company released two products, ChatGPT and DALL-E, both of which have raised fears about compromising election integrity. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also expressed concern about generative AI’s potential to spread disinformation.

The United States, which will hold presidential elections this year, is working with OpenAI to ensure election integrity. ChatGPT will direct users to CanIVote.org for election-related questions. OpenAI is also working on ways to clearly indicate when images are AI-generated using DALL-E, and is developing ways to identify DALL-E-generated content even after modification.

OpenAI has policies in place to prohibit the use of its technology in potentially abusive ways, such as creating chatbots pretending to be real people or discouraging voting. DALL-E is also prohibited from creating images of real people, including political candidates. However, the company faces challenges in policing what is actually happening on its platform, as it blocked the creation of images of Donald Trump and Joe Biden but allowed at least a dozen other U.S. politicians to be created.

The company’s blog post highlights that it prohibits its technology from being used in abusive ways and to ensure election integrity. They’re partnering with organizations to promote effective democratic processes and are working on ways to indicate when images are AI-generated and to identify AI-generated content even after modification. OpenAI is also faced with the challenge of policing what is happening on its platform, recently blocking the creation of images of Donald Trump and Joe Biden but allowing images of other U.S. politicians to be created.
