Reschedule Cannabis Or ‘Abolish The DEA,’ Says Physician: Examining The 50-Year-Old, Trillion-Dollar Agency

The Drug Enforcement Administration turned 50 in July 2023, after spending over $1 trillion on the unsuccessful War on Drugs, with particular focus on cannabis.
Documents have been released, related to the Department of Health and Human Service’s recommendation to the DEA for rescheduling cannabis and now the public is waiting to see what the DEA will do.
The DEA has asserted it has the final authority to reschedule or deschedule a drug under the Controlled Substances Act, and psychiatrist Julie Holland has recommended abolishing the agency if they fail to reschedule cannabis.
The DEA was created in 1970 under Richard Nixon and the Controlled Substance Act, which criminalizes drugs, and despite a $25 billion annual budget, the agency has consistently failed in the War on Drugs.
The War on Drugs undertook a punitive path, targeting minority communities, disproportionately leading to mass incarceration and devastation of communities.
The agency has questions to answer on its next steps concerning the failed War on Cannabis.
