OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes fears of AI dramatically reshaping the world are overblown. He stated at the World Economic Forum that artificial general intelligence (AGI) may be developed in the near future. Altman has emphasized the need to temper expectations of AGI’s capabilities and safety. OpenAI’s mission is to develop AGI, with a valuation of almost $100 billion and the backing of Microsoft. Altman believes AI is a tool for productivity and has downplayed concerns about job displacement.

Concerns about AI’s safety and OpenAI’s role were at the center of Altman’s brief ouster from the company in November. He was swiftly reinstated as CEO after a backlash from employees and investors, with Microsoft gaining a seat as a nonvoting board observer at OpenAI. Altman’s return has seen him temper the potential impact of AI on society, stating it is less ominous than many fear. As CEO of OpenAI, Altman is committed to tempering fears about AI’s future.
