Vistra Corp. is expanding its Permian Basin Power Plant in West Texas with two new natural gas units, increasing capacity from 325 to 1,185 megawatts to meet growing electricity demand. The project is part of a plan to strengthen ERCOT grid and add 2,000 megawatts by 2028.

Since 2020, Vistra has added 1,000 megawatts of capacity and plans to increase ERCOT’s generation by 2,000 megawatts by 2028. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott praised the expansion for stabilizing the grid, creating jobs, and boosting the economy.

Vistra has completed 400 megawatts of upgrades at Texas gas plants, nearing completion of a 200-megawatt solar facility and planning to repower a coal site with natural gas. The company expects to invest nearly $2 billion in Texas projects since 2020, adding about 3,100 megawatts of capacity.

Monahans Mayor Adam Steen highlighted the Permian Basin plant’s importance to the region, stating the expansion ensures the community remains central to the state’s energy solutions. VST shares are trading lower by 2.06% at $202.95.
