Alcoa has decided to permanently close its Kwinana alumina refinery in Western Australia due to various factors, reducing global refining capacity. The plant employs 220 people, with numbers expected to decrease by 2026. Alcoa will continue operating its port and rail facilities in the region. The company will incur restructuring charges of $890m for the closure.
