European rating agency Scope has expressed concern over the U.S. government shutdown, citing it as a negative factor for the nation’s credit score. Scope currently rates the U.S. ‘AA’ with a ‘negative outlook’, pointing to deepening political divisions and President Donald Trump’s attacks on the Federal Reserve as contributing factors. While a U.S. default remains unlikely, the risk is increasing. Scope predicts a need for further debt ceiling increases by 2028 due to the weak fiscal outlook, with Washington’s budget deficit expected to remain around 6% and the U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio to rise to 127% in the next five years.
