CME Group will introduce 24/7 cryptocurrency futures and options trading in early 2026, responding to increased client demand for continuous risk management. Tim McCourt, CME’s global head, highlights the necessity of aligning regulated markets with the fast-paced digital asset sector for confident trading at all times.
CME’s cryptocurrency products will trade continuously on the CME Globex platform, with a two-hour weekend maintenance pause. Trading on weekends or holidays will be recorded the next business day, ensuring operational consistency. The expansion of trading hours follows a year of record growth, with notional open interest reaching $39 billion in September 2025.
August saw a surge in average daily open interest and trading volume, with a notable increase in institutional engagement, as shown by over 1,010 large open interest holders across CME’s cryptocurrency products. CME Group’s ecosystem includes various benchmark products across asset classes, reflecting the growing maturity of digital assets and bridging traditional finance with the crypto economy.
