Spending is strong, delinquencies down from 2019

American Express CEO Stephen Squeri reported “good consumer spending” during the holidays, with lower delinquency rates than 2019. This comes despite December’s 0.3% increase in consumer prices, higher than expected. Squeri believes the U.S. is headed for a “soft landing,” with slowing spending and decreasing inflation without a recession. JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs CEOs also expressed caution about the economy.
American Express reports its fourth-quarter earnings on Jan 26.
