Algoma Steel Reports Incident at Coke-Making Plant

Algoma Steel Group Inc. experienced a structure collapse in their coke-making plant in the early hours of January 20, 2024, that caused no injuries, but did prompt unusual coke oven gas flaring and air emission. An unintended effluent discharge entered a nearby waterway but is contained. Operations are otherwise normal, and customer shipments are not anticipated to be affected. The company will perform a comprehensive damage assessment and has reached out to the community and regulators to ensure safety.
