Palworld, the ‘Pokémon with guns’ game, sold over 5 million copies in 3 days with a sales rate of 86,000 copies per hour on Steam, Xbox, and Windows PC, outpacing other major titles. However, the game faced controversy and death threats due to accusations of plagiarism, defended by developer Pocketpair who emphasized their commitment to game development and legal reviews. Despite the controversy, Palworld set records as the most-played game on Steam, surpassing Cyberpunk 2077 with a peak concurrent player count of 1,291,967. It also became the most-played Japanese-developed game on Steam and the second most-played paid game.
