A caller on “The Ramsey Show” asked if it was appropriate for her daughter to request $1,000 reimbursement for a job interview trip. Hosts Jade Warshaw and Ken Coleman advised against it, emphasizing the potential harm to her chances of getting the job.
The mother estimated the total cost of the trip, including airfare, Uber rides, hotel stays, meals, and missed wages, and wondered if it would be inappropriate to ask for at least partial reimbursement.
Coleman expressed disbelief at the trend of parents attending interviews with their adult children, calling it a major red flag for employers.
A survey by ResumeTemplates.com found that 77% of Gen Zers brought a parent to a job interview, and 53% had a parent speak directly with hiring managers. 45% said their parents regularly talk to their current boss, and 73% get help from their parents with work assignments.
Warshaw stressed the importance of being gracious and flexible during the job-seeking process, advising against causing unnecessary drama.
Coleman echoed the sentiment that parental involvement in job interviews can undermine a candidate’s credibility and stunt their professional growth.
ResumeTemplates’ Chief Career Strategist Julia Toothacre highlighted the risks of direct parental participation in the job-seeking process, noting that it can hinder a child’s credibility and professional growth.
Coleman advised Chelsea against asking for reimbursement, emphasizing the need to compete with other candidates without appearing entitled or too soft.
