Bhutan migrates its self-sovereign ID system to Ethereum, enabling its 800,000 residents to access government services. The integration with Ethereum is complete, with all resident credentials expected to migrate by Q1 2026. Bhutan previously used Polygon and Hyperledger Indy for its national ID system. Ethereum is the country’s third blockchain ID solution.

Bhutan, known for measuring national progress by Gross National Happiness, is now the fifth-largest Bitcoin-holding nation-state. It holds 11,286 Bitcoin worth $1.31 billion, acquired through mining with renewable energy at Himalayan hydropower dams. Bhutan may be exploring other crypto initiatives, having met with former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao in late September.

Bhutan’s commitment to self-sovereign identity on Ethereum is seen as a significant step towards a more open and secure digital future globally. The country has quietly become a leader in crypto adoption and Bitcoin holdings.
