Los Angeles Times to lay off 94 workers – union president

From Nasdaq:

The Los Angeles Times announces plans to lay off 94 journalists who belong to the newspaper’s union. This represents about a fourth of the union’s membership, far lower than the number of layoffs initially expected last week.

LA Times management has notified the head of the journalists’ union about the 94 intended layoffs. The newspaper has also announced that at least 115 roles will be cut, representing over 20% of its newsroom.

Managing Editor Sara Yasin resigned on Monday, and a little over a week earlier, Executive Editor Kevin Merida left. The move adds to the turmoil at the newspaper.

Owner Patrick Soon-Shiong said the paper loses $30 million to $40 million annually. The layoffs come amid projections for another year of heavy losses for the newspaper. The LA Times declined to comment.
