Netflix eliminates its cheapest ad-free plan

From Fortune:

Netflix has revealed a huge increase in new subscribers but also plans to retire its Basic ad-free subscription plan. This means customers who currently pay $11.99 monthly will need to opt in for advertising or upgrade to the next ad-free plan at $15.49 per month.

The Basic plan will be removed entirely, starting with Canada and the U.K., followed by the U.S. The ads plan now accounts for 40% of all Netflix sign-ups in ads markets.

Netflix will begin carrying WWE’s “Raw” starting in 2025. The Basic plan was removed as an option for new customers and those wanting to switch plans. The Basic plan let users stream on a single device and download content to another single device. The Standard plan offers more premium features.

Ad-supported plans are more affordable but require viewers to watch roughly four minutes of ads every hour. This change in subscription plans follows a recent crackdown on password sharing.

Netflix is looking to increase revenues and subscriptions, following a decline after the pandemic ended.
