Former New York governor Andrew Cuomo is focusing on crypto and AI to become the next NYC mayor, aiming to make the city a global tech hub. Plans include a new chief innovation officer role and an Innovation Council with advisory committees for crypto, AI, and biotech industries.

Cuomo has experience advising crypto exchange OKX and could shift NYC to be more welcoming to financial innovation. This could attract more industry talent, strengthen the connection between traditional finance and crypto, and increase inflows into crypto markets.

Current NYC Mayor Eric Adams has established the first municipal Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain Technology. Cuomo is an underdog in the mayoral race against Zohran Mamdani and Curtis Sliwa, with Mamdani leading in polls. Mamdani’s policy positions are more left-leaning, which has drawn criticism from some in the crypto industry.
