Which Is the Best Self-Custody Lightning Wallet?

From Nasdaq:

Anita Posch, a Bitcoin educator, is conducting a test of self-custodial Lightning wallets in Zimbabwe to find the best option for rural areas. No African-developed wallets are available, and Lightning is complex. As an educator, Posch aims to recommend reliable tools for sending small payments and is currently testing Blixt, Mutiny, Green, Zeus, and Phoenix.

The two self-custody Lightning wallets available in 2023 were Breez and Phoenix. In 2024, Posch tested Blixt, Mutiny, Green, Zeus, and Phoenix, including the Wallet of Satoshi. Each wallet underwent significant changes, and Posch aimed to determine the best for reliable, fast, and easy bitcoin sending and receiving. She also tested the costs involved.

Setting up the wallets and opening the Lightning payments channel in Harare before heading to rural areas was a challenge due to internet signal problems. Posch used Liquid to open a channel via Boltz.exchange to Lightning, which was more economical due to high transaction fees at the time. Network fees, transaction and service fees, and available balance varied across the different methods of opening a channel.

Posch’s test in a rural area outside Harare revealed inconsistent network coverage, making it difficult to download files even with decent internet speed. Anita aims to help users understand the differences between Bitcoin, Lightning, Liquid, and E-Cash and recommends only tested tools to prevent users from concluding that Bitcoin isn’t for them.
