Meta, the owner of Facebook, is cutting 600 positions from its Superintelligence Labs to enhance flexibility. The job cuts will impact the FAIR unit and product-related AI teams. The TBD Lab is unaffected. Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang aims to streamline decision-making and increase impact within each role.

Meta recently secured a $27 billion financing deal with Blue Owl Capital for its largest data center project. This move is seen as a way for Meta to achieve its AI ambitions by sharing upfront costs and risks. The company reorganized its AI efforts under Superintelligence Labs after setbacks with the Llama 4 model.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg led a hiring spree to revitalize Meta’s AI efforts, forming Superintelligence Labs which includes foundational, product, and FAIR teams. The company began investing in AI in 2013, launching the FAIR unit and recruiting chief AI scientist Yann LeCun. The company is encouraging affected employees to apply for other roles within Meta.
