Most Americans feel they pay too much in taxes: Poll

From Fortune:

A new poll from the University of Chicago finds most Americans feel they pay too much in taxes for the value they receive. Two-thirds say they overpay on federal income taxes, and at least 1 in 3 say the value of federal income tax, state sales tax, and local property tax is poor.

An even lower percentage said they would opt to increase taxes for more services beyond what’s currently offered.

16% of respondents say they are very or extremely confident in their local school district compared to just 6% of them being confident in the federal government.

The taxcode is perceived as full of loopholes by taxpayers. Of the 1 in 4 taxpayers who say federal taxes are a poor value, 40% say federal taxes are unfair. This doesn’t mean they believe that the federal government’s spending of tax dollars is not in the best interest of people like them; only 6% feel very confident about the federal government using their tax dollars in their best interest.

This news summary is based on a poll of 1,024 adults conducted by NORC from Dec. 14-18, 2023.
