Financial expert Suze Orman discussed the pros and cons of relying on real estate for retirement income on her podcast. A retiree named Susan planned to sell a rental property for $300,000 to replace lost rental income. Orman warned retirees not to overestimate rental income reliability due to unexpected costs like repairs.

Orman advised retirees like Susan to diversify their investments for consistent income. Options include fixed income with Treasuries, municipal bonds, and CDs for 4-5% returns, or a mix of growth and income investments like utility stocks, dividend-paying ETFs, or real estate investment trusts for 3-4% yield.

Immediate annuities were another option suggested by Orman, offering $1,400-$1,600 monthly on a $300,000 investment. However, she cautioned that this income might cease upon the annuitant’s death, potentially leaving a surviving spouse without that income stream.
