Less than half of Americans are adequately prepared for retirement, according to the Vanguard Retirement Outlook study. This lack of preparation could result in an inability to maintain current lifestyles during retirement, highlighting the importance of early retirement planning and not solely relying on Social Security.
Vanguard’s study also revealed that only 40% of baby boomers are on track for retirement, with Gen Z being the most prepared at 47%. Gen Z’s lead may be attributed to the accessibility of automatic wealth-building strategies and accounts, allowing them to start saving and investing earlier than previous generations.
Technology advancements, such as autoenrollment and target-date funds, have significantly improved savings behavior and investment outcomes, according to Vanguard. These features have played a crucial role in helping individuals, especially younger generations like Gen Z, prepare for retirement more effectively.
Homeownership can be a determining factor in retirement preparedness, with nearly 90% of baby boomers owning a home. This ownership provides flexibility in retirement planning, as home equity can be utilized through loans, reverse mortgages, or downsizing. Home equity significantly boosts retirement preparedness, especially for lower-income baby boomers.
