Rio Tinto and SPIC Qiyuan have launched a trial of battery swap electric haul trucks at the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia. The fleet includes eight 91-tonne Tonly electric trucks with 800 kWh batteries and a swapping station. This technology allows for quick battery replacement, reducing downtime and increasing fleet efficiency. The trial will run until 2026 to assess broader adoption across Rio Tinto’s fleet of 700 haul trucks, with around 100 vehicles already suitable for battery swap systems. This move is a significant step in reducing emissions from the haulage fleet and lowering carbon footprint.
