Alibaba-backed Xreal claims it’s an AR glasses unicorn

Alibaba-backed augmented reality glasses company Xreal receives $60 million in new funding, giving it a unicorn status with a valuation of over $1 billion. The latest AR glasses model, the Air 2 Ultra, is set to start shipping in March and is available for pre-order at $699. Xreal plans to use the funding for research, development, and factory expansion. The startup has now shipped 350,000 AR glasses since its launch in 2017, compared to 250,000 units in October and 150,000 units in May. Total investor backing has reached $300 million.

Apple’s Vision Pro virtual reality headset, set for release in the U.S. on Feb. 2, also allows users to see the real world using “spatial computing” technology. This comes as Xreal’s latest AR glasses model, the Air 2 Ultra, is set to start shipping in March and is available for pre-order at a fraction of Apple’s price tag of around $3,500 for the Vision Pro. Xreal plans to use the latest funding for research and development, as well as factory expansion. Total investor backing has now reached $300 million, Xreal said.
