Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are collaborating to develop two next-generation supercomputers, Lux and Discovery, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The $1 billion investment aims to advance U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC).
Lux AI, set to launch in 2026, will be the first U.S. AI Factory supercomputer. Powered by AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs and EPYC CPUs, Lux will enhance the DOE’s AI capabilities for energy, medicine, materials, and manufacturing innovation.
Discovery, designed for sovereign AI and scientific computing, uses AMD EPYC “Venice” CPUs and Instinct MI430X GPUs. Lisa Su, AMD’s CEO, highlights the importance of these supercomputers in advancing critical U.S. research priorities in science, energy, and medicine through public-private partnerships.
