The Food and Drug Administration is accelerating the development of generic versions of complex biological drugs to increase competition and lower drug costs in the U.S. This move could impact pharmaceutical companies, as biosimilars are as safe and effective as branded products but cost significantly less, saving $20 billion in healthcare costs last year.
The FDA’s new reforms aim to cut the time it takes to bring a biosimilar to market in half, addressing the outdated and burdensome approval process. Biosimilars have historically struggled to gain market share compared to generic small-molecule drugs due to complex manufacturing and regulatory challenges.
Biological products account for 51% of total drug spending in the U.S., despite making up only 5% of prescriptions. Biosimilars, which are half the price of branded counterparts, have the potential to drive down drug prices by another 25%, providing relief for patients and promoting competition in the market.
The FDA proposed major updates to simplify biosimilar studies, recommending against requiring additional “switching studies” that can slow development and create confusion. The agency aims to streamline the approval process to increase the market share of biosimilars and provide more affordable options for patients.
