Remote work rebellion: SAP’s RTO push prompts 5,000 employees to sign letter saying they ‘feel betrayed’

From Fortune Media Group Holdings:

1. SAP’s back-to-office policy has drawn significant employee backlash, with over 5,000 signatures on an internal letter protesting the plan. The works council says the requirement to be back in the office is unreasonable after employees were told they could work remotely.

2. SAP’s CEO has defended the company’s new back-to-office policy, claiming that working from home will cost SAP its culture and teamwork. The company’s new guidance will require employees globally to work in an office or on site with a customer three days a week from April.

3. Concerns over return-to-office requirements continue to rise, with companies like IBM also moving to require in-office attendance despite waning market interest in this. SAP’s employees have expressed worry over a zero-cost staff reduction strategy and a potential loss of valuable talent due to the new requirement.

4. Despite back-to-office requirements, US office attendance remains stagnant according to data from office security company Kastle Systems. These circumstances have not prevented SAP from announcing an extensive restructuring plan that will affect 8,000 employees. SAP aims to end 2024 with a headcount similar to current levels.

5. The works council at SAP has spoken out about the absence of significant salary increases over the years, expressing a willingness to adapt and take advantage of remote work possibilities to move to areas with lower living costs. This has become a major issue among SAP employees.
