Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologizes about child safety at Senate hearing
From Fortune Magazine:
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was questioned by a Senate Judiciary Committee regarding child safety policies. During the questioning, two Republican senators, Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz, pushed Zuckerberg to address families of teenagers who were victims of online abuse or exploitation. Zuckerberg issues a public apology in response to the demands from the senators and the families present at the hearing.
The families present at the hearing were parents of teenagers who suffered from online sexual abuse and mental health struggles caused by social media algorithms. These victims experienced exploitation, harassment, eating disorders, and drug overdoses due to their social media use. Zuckerberg’s apology came after Senator Hawley accused him of neglecting the issues that were brought to his attention over the years.
Described as a remarkable moment, Zuckerberg delivered a rare public apology to these families. He spoke directly to the gallery, expressing his empathy for the experiences they have suffered. Hawley also questioned why Zuckerberg and Meta hadn’t compensated any of the victims, to which Zuckerberg replied it was his job to “build tools” that keep Facebook and Instagram users safe.
