The Senate Commerce Committee in New Hampshire voted 4-2 to send a bill aimed at deregulating crypto mining for further review. House Bill 639 would prevent restrictions on crypto mining by municipalities and prohibit unique taxes on digital assets by state and local authorities. The bill affirms the right to mine cryptocurrencies.
A new report shows that coal’s share in Bitcoin mining has fallen from 63% in 2011 to 20% in 2024. Renewable energy use in mining has steadily risen, growing by 5.8% annually. Some US states are considering taxing energy used by crypto mining operations, with New York proposing a tiered excise tax based on energy consumption.
